F1: Ferrari confirm signing of Fernando Alonso for 2010

The "silly season" of driver transfers in Formula 1 can finally start resolving itself from today, as Ferrari have finally confirmed the signing of Fernando Alonso for the 2010 season.

Alonso has been dodging questions about the move for months

The double world champion will replace Ferrari's 2007 world champion, the on-form Finn Kimi Räikkönen, who did have a contract for next season with Ferrari. They were able to agree an early end to the drive with Kimi, leaving their drivers for next year as Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso.

Should Felipe Massa not have recovered from his injury fully for next season (although signs seem good), then they always have Giancarlo Fisichella -- brought in from Force India to fulfil the rest of the 2009 season from Monza onwards.

Some people are reporting Alonso signed with Ferrari back in July, but the team intended to keep it a secret until the end of the season. They didn't do a very good job at that, so it was announced today.

So what of Kimi Räikkönen? Many expect him to move back to McLaren to partner Lewis Hamilton, as current partner Heikki Kovalainen has not had quite the results expected of a McLaren driver this season. McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh has said of the matter it's his job to secure the best two drivers possible for the team, and we get the feeling even the solid performances and hard work Heikki has been putting in will not save his drive there next year.

Into the vacuum at Renault, Robert Kubica is expected to move from the BMW Sauber team. BMW have announced they are throwing in the towel at the end of this season (although we imagine someone will likely take over the team) -- so this is a good move for him.

Expect a cascade of announcements of this nature now leading up to the end of the season, as the in limbo status of Fernando Alonso seemed to be holding up almost everything.
