Although 3D barcodes have become popular recently due to their informational density, the original striped barcode is still incredibly widespread. Something put to good use by an early 90's handheld console, the Barcode Battler!
This console would encourage owners to scan as many random barcodes as possible, using the barcode to generate creature stats which could then be used in the game software.
This novel concept was especially popular in Japan. We remember legendary tales of supermarkets being under siege from a zombie-like army of barcode battler enthusiasts, having discovered that the barcode on a certain variety of noodles gave fantastic in game statistics.
