Google logo: Popeye's creator born 115 years ago

Elzie Crisler Segar was born 115 years ago today on December the 8th, 1894. January the 1st 2009 marked the year when Popeye became public domain (apart from in the US), due to over 70 years since the author's death in 1938 having elapsed.

Never has a character done so much to help mothers promote the virtues of cramming spinach down kids' throats. Though we never understood what both Popeye and Brutus saw in Olive Oyl! But do know what happened to Jesus when he went to Mount Olive..

We wrap up with some of Popeye's "mad rhymes". Starting "I'm Popeye the Sailor man, I'm Popeye the sailor man! ..."

I'm off on a trip / On me sturdy old ship. / I'm Popeye the sailor man!

When it comes to gyppers, / I clobber them clippers; / I'm Popeye the Sailor Man!

I'm strong to the finitch / 'Cause I eats me spinach. / I'm Popeye the sailor man!

I like to go swimmin' / With bowlegged women / I'm Popeye the Sailor Man!

There's no ifs, ans or maybes / I'll never have babies  / I'm Popeye the Sailor Man!

And finally, a great philosopher once said..

I yam what I yam, / And that's all what I yam. / I'm Popeye the sailor man!
